HOT Start for Softball

HOT Start for Softball

The first two weekend for the Lady Cougars, couldn't get much better.  For the first time since, at least the 2012 season, the Cougars are off 4-0 start.

Game 1 - SCC opened the season with a convincing 8-0 vicotory over, Highland out of Kansas.  Freshman Anna Cheatham would sprikle just 3 hits over the complete game vicotry, her first college win.  The offense got going in the first inning, when Hunter Collins would double home the games first run.  Jocelyn Cunningham would collect three hits and two RBI in the game, along with Kayden Tyler collect two RBI as well.  The Cougars woud tally 6 runs in the first inning, and Cheatham would be in control the rest of the game.

Game 2 - A slow and sluggish start for the Cougars would find them needing to play catch-up.  Once the bats got going it was all Cougars from there.  A good outing in the circle for both Cunningham and Kelly Allensworth, would eventually quiet the bats of Shawnee.  Cunningham would pick up the win.  The bats were hot, five diffent players for SCC would collect multiple hits, highlighted by two freshmen Apyrl Zeno and Emily Geary collecting their first college homeruns and combining to drive in seven runs.  Paige Perry, Cheatham and Collins would also have multi-hit games.

"I thought we played with a lot of passion and excitement today.  Our energy was high for most of the day, and we made plays when we need them.  I thought our offense looked good today, but was really happy with how our pitchers threw.  All in all, we walk out with two wins and thats what we hoped would happen", commented second year skipper Dustin Wengert.

Weekend series number two, would result in the same, but definately had its drama.

Game one saw a tight game until the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Cougars would explode for 10 runs in the inning.  Freshman Brooke Scott would go 4-4 on the day, and the Cougars would bang out 16 hits.  Abby Wilson and Mallory Waller would each drive in 2 runs.  The game proceeded to the top of the 5th where Lincoln Land CC would answer with 10 runs of their own.  SCC would walk it off in the bottom of the 7th with a Hunter Collins base hit.

"Not exactly how you draw that up, but I guess we will take it", smiled Wengert.  "I honestly felt we just took our foot of the pedal and relaxed too much in the 5th.  Luckily we were able to win it in the bottom of the 7th.  I thought Joce did a great job, and I would've let her finish but she has been on a pitch count and I didn't feel we should push it with a 10-0 lead.  we ultimately got the result we wanted."

Game two was a less dramatic has the Cougars would lead most of the game, LLCC would tie in the top of the 6th but it would be short-lived as SCC would answer in the bottom half.  Kylee Orf lead the Cougars at the plate going 3-3 and driving in a run. Bailey Kuhnert chipped in with two hits and two RBI and Cheatham also had two hits of her own.

"I think this team has potential, we have to continue to grow and work through some things.  However i do think we are trending in the right direction.  The girls have expectations now, I am not sure that could've been said a year ago.  This groupd knows what I expect from them and how I want them to compete," spoke Wengert.
