Cougars Open Season With 2 Wins

Cougars Open Season With 2 Wins

The Cougars wasted little time in the opening weekend to get things going. A five-run first inning set the tone to a 9-1 final in game one against Shawnee CC.

Abbey Hutlz would go the distance allowing just two hits and one run, while striking out nine.  Hultz also contributed at the plate with a triple and an RBI in the first inning.

The Cougars would scatter 11 hits in the game and a knock out blow from Hunter Collins in the second inning, as she recorded her first homerun of the season.  Bailey Kuhnert, Janna Joerling, and Collins all had a multi-hit game.  Kayden Tyler, Bailee Howard, and Jocelyn Cunningham all joined the hit parade too.

"I thought the big first inning was key for us.  It really seemed to take the nerves out of the equation from that point on," said Head Coach Dustin Wengert.  "Abbey was exactly want she need to be in her first outing of the season.  She is a good one, and will only get better as the season goes on."

Game two would seem the same kind of explosivness at the plate from the Cougars.  Again, the Cougars would explode for a five-run first inning.  Jocelyn Cunningham and McKenna Joern would have all they need from there.

Cunningham went three innings, collecting her first college win in the circle and Joern would throw two innings in relief.  They combined to allow on five hits in the game.

Hultz, Kuhnert, and Collins would lead the way offenseively again, with Collins collecting her second homerun of the season.  Joerling, Howard, Kenzie Bensinger, and Liv reed would also collect hits for the Cougars in game two of the day.

"Again, the big first inning was a great way to start, especially with a freshman in the circle," noted Wengert.  "We weren't perfect and that to be expected but, overall very happy with the day."

The Cougars are schedule to open up at home on February 28, but it has been pushed back to March 1.  Lincoln Land CC will come to Cotteville for a doubleheader starting at 1pm.

Congrats also to Coach Dustin Wengert for gaining his first WIN at the colligiate level.  We hope to see many more hear at SCC!
