Softball Spits Opening Weekend

Softball Spits Opening Weekend

The Lady Cougars opened up their season with a couple of double headers this past weekend. Saturday, February 29 SCC faced Lewis & Clark and Sunday, March 1 took on MCCAC Conference opponent Mineral Area College. The Cougars came away with two wins on the weekend.

Game one of Saturday's double header, the Cougars battled a 9 inning game against the Trailblazers and came up short with LC scoring late and SCC not being able to answer back. The extra inning game was a heartbreaker to open up the season with, but the Cougars grit has the fans looking forward to an exciting season ahead.

Game two did not go in the favor of St. Charles. The Trailblazers put up 15 runs on 16 hits while the Cougars put up 7 runs on 12 hits, but also committed three errors that put LC too far ahead.

On Sunday the Cougars bounced back with hot bats against Mineral Area. Elizabeth Davis singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs in the first inning. The bats continued to stay hot and the defense was fundamentally sound throughout the game. St. Charles put up four runs in the fifth inning to walk off the first game 8-0 with big hits from Sahaura Pauley and a double by Gabby Powell. The Cougars put up 11 hits while Liz Davis only gave up 2 hits in the circle.

The last game of the weekend ended in exciting, walk off fashion. Mineral Area went up 3-0 in the second inning and the Cougars answered back, tying it late 3 to 3 in the fifth. The small ball game came in clutch for the Cougars in the bottom of the 7th. Emily Kramer led off with a base hit, bunts by Amanda Downing and Gabrielle Powell set up the perfect walk off situation for leadoff hitter, Maggie Dooley. Dooley came up big for the Cougars with a base hit over the infield to score Emily Kramer and win the game.

The SCC Cougars will be back in action tomorrow, March 3rd with an added series against Lincoln Land Community College at Home starting at 2:00.
